It was also used as the opening track for Burn The Stage Episode 6 on the 26th April 2018, titled Moonchild. “4 o’clock” is a song close to my heart. I hope that you’re able to rest in it like I do. It could be a continuation of the bird’s song, with the bird asking the person in question, “Why are you crying when it’s just you and me — surely I didn’t do anything wrong?” Yet it could also be the person’s response, “Why are you crying out for others to hear when it’s just you and me?” Either way, they are searching for something or someone, but as of yet, it’s a fruitless endeavour. The two of them are in the park together, but they may as well be alone. The bird, after all, is introduced as one that is nameless and therefore anonymous to us. The plaintive nature of this stanza is deepened by the sibilance of the r/l’ sound that litters the first two lines, and how the oh you’ echoes a bird call. ChorusThe darkest part of night and early morning haze begins to lift. The human and bird become more familiar with one another. The bird’s song brings in the sunrise. The blue haze of the moon fades away, replaced by the bold red of the sun. Verse 2RM hits his rap hard, plosive consonants spat out as harsh as the sun’s rays. For while we often speak of the sun heralding a new morning, full of wondrous possibilities, warmth, and new energy, it’s not always this way. Instead, we can feel like we’re under the spotlight — constantly tested, pushed, forced. All the parts of us which have frayed and shattered throughout the day have to be slowly pieced back together. Later, under the moonlight. Later, when the light is gentle and unassuming. Of course, there is symbolism in the contrasting primary colours. While translated here as the colours red and blue, the word for red’ can also mean bright’ and bold’. Bright is not always warm, and blue is not always cold. There are suggestions that the movie referenced by RM here is Moonlight 2016. Final ChorusAfter another round of the pre-chorus and chorus, we end with an unfinished chorus. The blue light that was with us … disappears. As V’s voice and backing instrumentals cut off, we too are brought back to the present. Concluding ThoughtsThe English title is “4 o’clock”, but “네시” can also be the informal way of saying “your poem”. While framed as a letter to the moon, it is just as much of a letter to all of us. It’s an acknowledgement of what it means to be human to struggle, to break, but to also keep on living. V and RM gently share with us the two ways that have allowed them to keep living. First, by making music. Second, by seeking good company. The bird and/or human searches for their friend. And we know through V’s fancafe post that he was inspired to write this as he waited for Jimin in the early hours of the morning. And if this is the case — if the moon itself becomes symbolic of something or someone who is so fragile yet gentle, and so so kind — the letter is not just written to the moon, but for anything or anyone that is a comfort to them. This returns us to where we always begin, where we always end up. Music is their way of expressing who they are and what they do. And it’s their way of extending their solace to us.
